25, 27, and 40), three of which appear incomplete, followed by relatively complete aquatic habitats with longer chains. For the two-dimensional webs, seven out of eight webs are incomplete (terrestrial habitats, marshes, and the rocky intertidal). We suggest that the three-dimensional food web descriptions, particularly those of webs in open seas, more completely reflect real food webs, while the two-dimensional and terrestrial three-dimensional webs are descriptions of habitat compartments of real food webs. This is consistent with the resource compartmentation hypothesis and niche theory (6, 8) and the notion of mobile predators linking habitat compartments (9). This analysis also illustrates that relations between environment and chain length cannot be established until the parameters that are

Constraints on food chain length arising from regional metacommunity dynamics.

Classical ecological theory has proposed several determinants of food chain length, but the role of metacommunity dynamics has not yet been fully considered. By modelling patchy predator-prey metacommunities with extinction-colonization dynamics, we identify two distinct constraints on food chain length. First, finite colonization rates limit predator occupancy to a subset of prey-occupied site...

Food web expansion and contraction in response to changing environmental conditions.

Macroscopic ecosystem properties, such as major material pathways and community biomass structure, underlie the ecosystem services on which humans rely. While ecologists have long sought to identify the determinants of the trophic height of food webs (food chain length), it is somewhat surprising how little research effort is invested in understanding changes among other food web properties acr...

Food-chain length and adaptive foraging.

Food-chain length, the number of feeding links from the basal species to the top predator, is a key characteristic of biological communities. However, the determinants of food-chain length still remain controversial. While classical theory predicts that food-chain length should increase with increasing resource availability, empirical supports of this prediction are limited to those from simple...

DYNAMIC COMPLEXITY OF A THREE SPECIES COMPETITIVE FOOD CHAIN MODEL WITH INTER AND INTRA SPECIFIC COMPETITIONS

The present article deals with the inter specific competition and intra-specific competition among predator populations of a prey-dependent three component food chain model consisting of two competitive predator sharing one prey species as their food. The behaviour of the system near the biologically feasible equilibria is thoroughly analyzed. Boundedness and dissipativeness of the system are e...
